Stable input of man-years in specialist health service (preliminary figures)

Statistics Norway presents figures on personnel in the specialist health service from an administrative register for the first time. The register-based figures show no significant change from 2007 to 2008. The total number of contracted man-years increased from 104 900 to 105 200.

New data source

This is the first publication of statistics on personnel in the specialist health service based on data from administrative registers. The figures for 2007 and 2008 are based on data collected from administrative registers. Previously the data were collected from a questionnaire. Please see About the statistics for more information on the data sources.

Final figures for the specialist health service will be published on 18 June.

No significant change in figures on personnel in specialist health service

The specialist health service was made up of 129 700 jobs in 2008. A total of 113 800 (88 per cent) of these are related to central government quasi corporations (health enterprises), while 15 900 (12 per cent) are related to the private sector. The specialist health service includes 105 200 contracted man-years. Many people work part time. Adjusted for long-term leave, the number of man-years is 94 200.

The number of contracted man-years, 105 200, is distributed among four regions (regional health enterprises), Helse Sør-Øst, Helse Vest, Helse Midt-Norge and Helse Nord. Helse Sør-Øst has 56 per cent of the contracted man-years in the specialist health service, and is the largest region.

A total of 76 per cent of the contracted man-years in the specialist health service relates to personnel with qualifications as health personnel.
