Electrification of Transport: Challenges, mechanism and solutions (ELECTRANS)
Electrification of the car fleet will increase the interdependence between the transport system and the electricity market. This will require new policy measures and improved coordination and collaboration between different policy makers and institutions. We assess different policy measures and investigate through numerical models how an electrification of the Norwegian car fleet may affect the transport system and the electricity market.

About the Project
By using power from the grid rather than petrol from the pump, air pollution per mile driven will be reduced, but on the other hand, it reduces the cost of using the car. This may lead to more car usage and thereby lead to increased social costs in terms of congestion, road wear and accidents. Charging behavior may also increase the pressure on the grids. We assess different combinations of policy measures which can minimize the social cost of an electrification of the car fleet.
A successful electrification will require coordination of measures and collaboration across policy fields and institutions. It can be difficult to implement the most efficient combination of measures. We identify obstacles for cooperation and assess how they can be circumvented.
We provide scenarios for how an electrification of the car fleet may affect the electricity market and the transport sector, dependent on technological development and the choice of policy measures. These numerical studies are conducted by linking transport models with an energy market model.
We assess how climate policy in Norway and the EU affects the optimal timing for the electrification and the benefits of the transformation.
