Change in publishing routines - main figures for marriages and separations are ready

Main figures for marriages and divorces will as from now be published in the middle of February. This is half a year sooner than in the previous years. This is due to Statistics Norway's improved controlling system of data.

Main figures will contain the total number of marriages, divorces and separations for the whole country and for all counties by the groom's residence county. More detailed statistics will be published 1. September.

This change in publishing routines implies that the final figures for the population per 1. January and the population changes in the previous year and the last quarter of the previous year will be published in February. See Population 1 January 2006 and changes in the fourth quarter of 2005 and Population statistics. Population by age, sex, marital status and citizenship. 1 January 2006 .

Stable figures for marriages

During the last three years the figures of marriages contracted have been quite stable with almost 22 400 marriages per year. and lay thus at the same level as marriage figures in the late 1990-ties. In the years 2000 and 2002 the figures for marriages were slightly higher, but nevertheless far lower than in the years between 1940 and 1975, when approximately 30 000 couples married each year.
