The Labour Force Survey’s seasonally-adjusted monthly figures show the short-term development in employment and unemployment. The unemployment rate was 4.2 per cent in January 2017.

Decrease in unemployment

The seasonally adjusted unemployment decreased by 0.6 percentage points from October 2016 to January 2017, to 4.2 per cent. The decrease happened mainly among those over the age of 24.

From October (average of September–November) 2016 to January (average of December–February) 2017, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment decreased by 0.6 percentage points, or 17 000 persons. The decrease happened mainly among those over the age of 24. In comparison, the number of people registered as unemployed or on government initiatives to promote employment with the Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV) decreased by 1 000 persons in the same period. This figure is also based on seasonally-adjusted figures and three-month averages. 

Small changes in employment

According to the Labour Force Survey (LFS), the seasonally adjusted number of employed persons decreased by 11 000 persons from October 2016 to January 2017. This change is within the LFS margin of error. The population aged 15–74 years increased in this period, and the employment rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points, to 66.8 per cent in January.
