Banks’ most important funding sources for their long term lending are customer deposits and security debt. Cash flows between the customers and the Government, the holiday pay to employees etc. creates a short term liquidity need for the banks; a need they can cover by drawing on their deposits or by borrowing from central banks, by selling assets or by inter-bank loans (inter-bank loans are loans and deposits between banks).
