Steadily fewer social assistance clients

The number of social assistance recipients fell by approximately 13,500 persons from 1997 to 1998. Welfare payments declined by about NOK 260 million at the same time.

The number of social assistance recipients went down from 146,600 in 1997 to around 133,000 in 1998. From 1996 to 1997 the roll declined by 7,200 clients. Welfare payments totalled an estimated NOK 3,730 billion in 1998, compared with NOK 3,994 billion the year before.
