Road traffic accidents involving personal injury, March 1999:

Still fewer traffic fatalities


In the first quarter this year 48 persons lost their lives on the roads. This was 18 fewer than in the first quarter last year and 14 fewer than the average for the period 1994-1998. The number of youth fatalities in the first three months of the year was only half as many as in the same period last year.

In March eleven persons lost their lives in traffic. This is the lowest number of fatalities in March since the statistics were first recorded by month in 1968. Last year twenty persons died in March traffic. The average number of fatalities for March during the last five years has been 23. Among the fatalities last month there were five drivers of automobiles, two passengers of automobiles, one motorcyclist, one moped driver, one pedestrian and one person sledging.
