Building cost index, houses, December 1998:

Building costs rise 3.8 per cent


From December 1997 to December 1998 total building costs rose by 3.8 per cent. The increase was greatest for multi-dwelling houses with 4.1 per cent, while total building costs rose by 3.9 per cent for row houses and 3.6 per cent for detached houses.
Total material costs increased by 2.3 per cent from December 1997 to December 1998. Material costs for multi-dwelling houses had the greatest increase, 2.6 per cent. The rise was somewhat less for row houses and detached houses, 2.2 per cent.

In this period the sub-index for electrician work rose the most. Total building costs for electrician work rose by about 6.5 per cent, whereas the total material costs for electrician work rose by 5.9 per cent.

From November 1997 to December 1998 there were no changes in the total building and material costs.
