264 traffic fatalities so far this year

There have been 6,289 traffic accidents involving personal injury so far this year, according to preliminary police reports. Two hundred and sixty-four persons were killed in these accidents. This is the highest fatality figure since 1989, when 273 persons were killed from January to September. Altogether 8,588 persons were injured in the first nine months of this year. The casualty figures are the highest since 1990.

Compared to the figures for January to September last year, accidents were up by 55, fatalities 33 and number injured 178.

Preliminary figures so far in 1998 show that the number of accidents involving personal injury increased the most in Oslo, Hedmark and Akershus. Compared to January to September last year, accidents in these three counties increased by 97, 62 and 58 respectively.

39 fatalities in September

September proved to be yet another grim month for accidents, with 39 fatalities, six more than during the same month last year. The average number of September fatalities in the period from 1993 to 1997 was 27.
