Index of production, July 1998:

Slightly lower all-items index for industry

Production in the oil and gas industry, manufacturing, mining and quarrying, and electricity supply (all-items index) has dropped by 1.6 per cent in the last month after taking normal seasonal fluctuations into account. If the weekly corrected statistics are compared, the all-items index is 2.2 per cent lower than in July 1997.
Oil and gas production declined 0.9 per cent from June to July. Production was then around 4.5 per cent lower compared to the same month last year. There has otherwise been a three per cent increase in power production from June to July. Production in July was 0.6 per cent lower than one year ago.

Growth in seasonally adjusted figures

Production in manufacturing and mining and quarrying grew 3.2 per cent from June to July. In manufacturing alone the growth was 2.7 per cent, taking into account normal season fluctuations. Seasonally adjusted figures must otherwise be cautiously interpreted because of changes in recent years in holiday-taking in several of the industries.
