Road traffic accidents involving personal injury, July 1998:

Sharp rise in fatal motorcycle accidents


Fourteen people died in motorcycle accidents in July, 12 more than in the same month last year. One-hundred twenty-five sustained injuries in July, compared to 108 in July last year.
Six of the 14 motorcyclists were killed colliding with a car, while four died after running off the road. Two people had fatal collisions with moose and two died when their bike tipped over.

Four of the deceased motorcyclists were between the ages of 20 and 24, four were between 25 and 28, five between 32 and 34 and one was 50.

Twenty-eight fatalities from January to July
Twenty-eight motorcyclists lost their lives from January to July, 14 more than the same period in 1997 and one more that all of last year. Besides the 14 fatalities in July, there were four in April, five in May and five in June. No motorcyclists lost their lives during the first three months of this year.

Four hundred twenty-five motorcyclists have been injured so far this year, compared to 406 the same period last year.
