Offences reported to the police, 2nd quarter 1998. Preliminary figures:

More Sexual Crimes

The number of reported rapes has increased from 193 in the first half last year to 229 in the first half this year. During the same period 47 cases of attempted rape were reported, six more than for the first half last year. Reports of incest and immoral intercourse with children under 14 and 16 also increased.
89 cases of incest were reported compared with 80 for the same period last year. 253 cases of immoral intercourse with children under 14 were reported as opposed to 230 a year ago. 98 cases of immoral intercourse with children under 16 were reported as opposed to 89 for the same period last year. The increase in the number of incest cases for the first half follows a trend that has lasted since 1994, when the number of reports was particularly low for this type of offence.

As we can see, the number of sexual crimes has increased for all items, but violation of the pornography legislation has dropped considerably with 113 reported offences this year compared with 319 for the same period a year ago.

Crimes of Narcotics Continued to Rise

The figures for the first half of 1998 show a rise of 15 percent in reported crimes of narcotics. Violations of section 162, subsections 1 and 4 of the Penal Code rose by 9 percent. Serious crimes of narcotics, i.e. violations of section 162, subsections 2 and 3 of the Penal Code, increased by 16 percent over last year. 17 percent more crimes against the Act relating to medicinal goods, etc. were reported.

Crimes of Violence Increased

Crimes of violence increased by almost 8 percent for the first half of 1998. 4 percent more cases of common assault were reported during the period. Reports of assault inflicting bodily harm increased by 6 percent over last year. Other crimes of violence showed an increase of 13 percent for the first half of 1998. Common assaults and assaults inflicting bodily harm represent over half of all reported crimes of violence. Reported common assaults have risen throughout the 1990s. Increases in the number of assaults inflicting bodily harm have been registered since 1995.
