The Consumer Price Index as per 15 June 1998:

Increased rents

The consumer price index rose by 0.2 percent from May to June this year. Increased rents and price rises on individual foods and services were important factors behind this trend. Reduced energy prices were one of the factors counteracting this trend.
From June 1997 to June 1998 (the 12-month growth rate) the consumer price index rose 2.1 percent, the same as from May to May. The total index for June was 276.0 (1979=100).

Rents increased by 0.8 percent from the 1st to the 2nd quarter this year. The growth in the corresponding period in 1997 was 1.2 percent. Households in rented dwellings experienced the greatest increase, whereas households in housing co-operatives, blocks of privately owned flats and similar arrangements experienced only a slight increase in housing rents from the first to the second quarter this year. For all households taken together, rents rose by 2.3 percent in the last twelve months.

The prices of hotel guest-nights rose by 2.3 percent from June last year to June this year. Package tours and rental of holiday houses also underwent a price increase in this period. Other services, such as repair of cars and visits to restaurants also registered a price increase in the previous month.

Summer Food

Food prices rose a total of 1.2 percent from May to June. This was mainly due to a seasonal price rise in vegetables and potatoes. The prices of tomatoes, carrots and cauliflower in particular underwent a marked price rise, while the prices of peppers went down. Some meat products also registered a price rise in June.

In the last twelve months food prices have risen 4.4 percent. This is the highest 12-month growth rate since the close of the 1980s. It is especially sugar, vegetables, fruit and dairy products that have had the biggest price increases in the last twelve months. The traditional summer meal of mackerel, potatoes and cucumber cost an average household NOK 97 in June this year compared with NOK 88 at the same time last year. The average kilogram price of sausages to broil was just over NOK 2 more expensive, whereas the kilogram price of chops was about NOK 2 cheaper compared with June 1997.
