Index of Production, May 1998

Slightly lower oil and power production

The production in oil and gas extraction, manufacturing , mining and quarrying, and electricity supply (the total index) has decreased by 0.7 percent in the last month, when normal seasonal variations are factored in. This is primarily a result of a decline in energy producing industries. If weekly corrected statistics are compared, the total index is 0.4 percent lower than it was in May 1997.
Seasonally adjusted, the oil and gas extraction has decreased by 4.3 percent from April to May. The production was about 8 percent lower than in the same month last year. This decline was mainly due to shutdowns for maintenance in some of the North Sea fields and lower gas production in the Troll field. There has also been a decrease of 3 percent in power production from April to May. This production was about 5 percent lower in May this year than it was a year ago.

Unchanged production in manufacturing

The production in manufacturing and mining and quarrying has undergone a growth of 0.2 percent from April to May. In manufacturing there was a decline of 0.1 percent. The paper and paper products, mineral products, furniture and metal products industries have had an increase in the last month, whereas other industries, such as the printing and publishing industry and the chemical industry have had a moderate decline in production. Over the first five months of this year, the production was 5.1 percent higher than in the corresponding period last year.
