Camping Statistics, May 1998:

Over a half million guest-nights

In May 1998 Norwegian campgrounds had a little over 550,000 guest-nights. The number of guest-nights from the domestic market was 86 percent, and 14 percent of the traffic was from the foreign market.

After last year's first five months the number of guest-nights at campgrounds was almost 1.3 million, of which 1.1 million, 87 percent, were Norwegian. So far this year our Nordic neighbours, the Swedes and the Danes, together with the Germans have been the most frequent users of Norwegian campgrounds, accounting for 31, 24 and 17 percent of the total foreign traffic respectively.

Many spent a night in a caravan

Guest-nights in caravans, where a contract was signed for long-term rental regardless of the extent of use (seasonal contract), accounted for 56 percent of the total traffic in May. It is assumed that most of the guest-nights in caravans on seasonal contracts were by Norwegians.

602 campgrounds were registered as open in May. These had an indoor capacity of 8,844 cottages and/or rooms.
