Population statistics. Population 1 April 1998 and population changes in the 1st quarter:

Immigration on the rise

Nearly 8,000 persons moved to Norway in the course of the first three months of 1998, while 4,400 moved abroad. This is the highest immigration seen in the first quarter for many years.

The population growth was therefore larger than during the same period last year, despite a sinking birth rate, preliminary statistics from Statistics Norway show.

Among Nordic citizens, 1,700 more moved to instead of from Norway in the first quarter of 1998. Swedes made up the largest group, with 1,100. Net immigration of other Europeans amounted to 700. Immigration from the Third World came to a net total of almost 1,500, 1,000 of whom are Asian citizens. More Norwegians moved from Norway (2,400) than moved to Norway (1,900).
