Consumer price index at 15 April 1998:

More expensive food, cheaper electricity

The consumer price index rose 0.1 per cent from 15 March to 15 April 1998. The increase in the price of food, recreation and airline tickets contributed to the rise, while cheaper electricity and gas were offsetting factors.
The all-items index for April was 275.8. From April last year to April this year the consumer price index rose 2.5 per cent, compared to 2.3 per cent in March. The price of groceries rose altogether 0.7 per cent in the last month, mainly because of a seasonal price increase for vegetables. In particular, the price of sweet peppers and tomatoes rose sharply. The increase in the price of coffee, sugar, milk and dairy products was also an important factor behind the trend from March to April. Food prices were 4.3 per cent higher in April than at the same time last year. This is the fastest growth since December 1988. Prices of imported products and daily products have increased sharply in the last 12 months.
