Lorry survey, 4th quarter 1997. National transports:

Road freight increases

Norwegian-registered goods vehicles with a payload of more than one tonne hauled 239.9 million tonnes of goods within Norway in 1997. This is 6.9 per cent more than in 1996. Haulage totalled 11.6 billion tonne-kilometres, up 11.3 per cent compared to 1996.
Hired vehicles engaged in unscheduled freight transport hauled a total of 145.4 million tonnes of goods in 1997. Road haulage contractors therefore carried 60.6 per cent of all goods in 1997. Hired lorries accounted for 8.8 billion tonne-kilometres, or fully 75.7 per cent of the haulage carried out.

Longer trips

Haulage increased more in relative terms than the quantity transported from 1996 to 1997. This is because there has been a modest shift away from shipments of goods that are traditionally carried short distances to cargo that is usually hauled longer distances.
