1  From 31 December 2006 and onwards the statistics also include natural protected areas by The Act relating to wildlife and wildlife habitats and The Act relating to Salmonids and Fresh-Water Fish etc.
2  From 31 December 2003 onwards, the area figures are calculated based on digital overlay analysis, a higher accuracy are thus obtained.
3  This category included areas protected because of plants, birds, and animals. It has been expanded with protected areas according to The Act relating to wildlife and wildlife habitats from 31 December 2007 onwards.
4  Protected according to the Svalbard Environmental Proctection Act. These areas are not included in the totals for protected areas.
5  Nature Diversity Act. 19 of June 2009, management and protection of the natural environments diversity. The Act provides rules for the sustainable use and protection of the natural environment. This means new tools for safeguarding nature, not only within, but also outside protected areas. The Nature Diversity Act replaces the earlier law of Nature Conservation Act, parts of Wildlife Act and protections by the Act relating to Salmonids and Freshwater Fish.
