Population and Housing Census
How the census was carried out
The population and housing census was held 3. November 2001. A form was sent to all households in Norway, with questions about the housing. A couple of weeks earlier, all apartments and flats had been given their unique address. This improves the Norwegian address registers, and hence future censuses can be carried out without forms.
Why in the world are we asking that?
The Population and Housing Census show how people in Norway live. This census form consisted of 29 questions. Statistics Norway has good reasons for asking precisely these questions.
The Censuses give us our history
A population and housing census was conducted on 3 November 2001 in Norway. About every 10 years since 1769, Norway has conducted such censuses, which provide us with valuable information about how people live in this country. The 2001 census was the last census in which people had to fill out the forms themselves.
Censuses in other countries
Most countries conduct population and housing censuses at least once every 10 years. According to the United Nations around 95 per cent of the worlds population has been covered by such counts in the last 10 years. Population and housing censuses were conducted over the course of autumn 2001 in a number of countries.
Norway's last census form
The 2001 Population and Housing Census was the last census in which people had to fill out the form themselves. One of the objectives of the census was to improve the quality of the registers so that Statistics Norway can subsequently withdraw statistics directly. The population register contains information about persons and families, while the Ground Property, Address and Building Register (GAB Register) contains information about homes. Until the 2001 Census, the GAB Register has not been complete because it has lacked information about dwellings in apartment buildings built before 1983.
All apartments has been given their own address
In 2001, all flats in Norway were given a unique address.
