Norwegian economy makes moderate headway
The trend growth of the past two years is expected to continue for another few years, before an economic upturn in 2014. Unemployment is set to increase in the years ahead, and thereafter remain more or less unchanged.

Growth in the Norwegian economy
Gross domestic product (GDP) for mainland Norway increased by 0.8 per cent from the 2nd to the 3rd quarter of 2011, according to preliminary figures from the quarterly national accounts. Production of goods, and in particular the production of electricity, contributed strongly to the increase.

Explanation of terms


Gross domestic product (GDP)
The gross domestic product (GDP) is a measure of the sum of value added in a country and comprises market activities as well as general government, voluntary organisations and production for own consumption.

Mainland Norway
Mainland Norway is defined as the Norwegian economy except extraction of crude oil and natural gas (including related services), pipeline transport and ocean transport.

Consumer price index (CPI)
The consumer price index (CPI) shows the development in prices of goods and services purchased by households.

CPI-ATE
The consumer price index adjusted for tax changes and energy products (CPI-ATE). Norges Bank places particular emphasis on the development in the CPI-ATE in their evaluation of underlying inflation.

The current account
The current account consists of the surplus on the balance of goods and services (i.e. exports less imports of goods and services) and net income and transfers.

Unemployed (LFS)
Unemployed is defined as persons with no income-earning work, but who are seeking work and can start working immediately. The percentage is calculated from the labour force.

Employed (LFS)
Employed is defined as persons with income from work.
