Gjennomgående for all Halvorsens forskning er mikroøkonometriske atferdsanalyser på ulike temaer. Hovedarbeidsfeltene de siste årene er husholdningenes energiforbruk og husholdningenes resirkuleringsatferd. Hun har også arbeidet med analyser av tannbehandlingsfrykt, fordelingsanalyser og verdsettingsanalyser, som er temaet for Halvorsens doktorgrad. Halvorsen har også jobbet mye med metoder for aggregering av mikroatferd.
