Road traffic accidents involving personal injury, August 1997:

August accidents claim 32 lives


A total of 197 persons lost their lives and 7,316 were injured in traffic accidents in the first eight months of the year, preliminary figures show. This is 33 more fatalities and 233 more casualties compared to the same period last year. The average for 1992-1996 shows seven fewer injured compared to so far this year. The number of persons killed in traffic accidents in August is the highest this year, with 32 fatalities.
Twenty-five persons died in traffic accidents in August last year. The average for August in the five-year period 1992-1996 is 24 fatalities.

Of those killed so far this year, 100 were motorists and 39 were passengers. Twenty-two persons lost their lives in motorcycle accidents. The other fatalities included five mopedists, seven cyclists, 16 pedestrians, three people on sleds and five other road-users.
