Fewer suicides among young men

In 1994, 70 suicides were registered among men under the age of 25, down from 94 in 1991 and 1992 and 74 in 1993. The overall suicide rate was 25 per cent lower in 1994 compared to 1988.

Cause of death statistics at Statistics Norway show that 531 deaths - 379 men and 152 women - were registered as suicides in 1994. This is about 180 fewer suicides compared to 1988, when the highest ever number of suicides was recorded. In 1994 the suicide rate was 12.2 per 100,000 residents. One would have to go back to 1979 to find a lower figure.
