The final aquaculture figures show 2010 to be a record-breaking sales year in Norwegian fish farming. The first-hand value for reared fish reached NOK 30.7 billion, with a corresponding quantity of one billion tonnes.
At the end of 2010, the stocks in the fish farms were 370 million live fish; an increase of 5.4 per cent compared with 2009. Accordingly, and in spite of a year of top sales quantities, stocks remained sizeable.
Because of a 16.4 per cent increase in employment in salmon and trout farming, 450 more people were employed in aquaculture in 2010 than in 2009.
