Explanation of terms
Enterprise
An enterprise is a legal unit. Examples of an enterprise are a limited company, sole proprietorship, general partnership, etc.
Establishment
An establishment is defined as a local kind of activity unit, which mainly conducts activities within a specific industry group.
Relationship between enterprise and establishment
An enterprise can be linked to more than one business if it is involved in activities in different geographic locations or within different industries. This business is known as an establishment, and this is where the jobs are. An example of an enterprise is Hydro Aluminium AS, which is a limited company with numerous establishments.


Group of companies
Independent legal units (enterprises) linked together through shareholdings that make up an economic unit.
Newly established enterprise
A newly established enterprise is a totally new legal unit. New enterprises taking over an existing activity are not classified as newly established enterprises.
Personally owned enterprise
Enterprises in which the owners are personally responsible. This covers the organisational forms general partnership, companies with shared liability and sole proprietorships.
Public limited company (ASA in Norway)
Enterprises in which none of the participants have personal liability for the enterprise's debt. An ASA will normally have more shareholders than a private limited company (AS in Norway), and must comply with other rules as regards board of directors and share capital.
Employees
The number of employees comprises all persons that work for the employer for more than four hours a week.
Employed persons
This is defined as the sum of all employees and business owners who work in the business.
Business activities
Business activities comprise many different types of activities, including renting, advertising, consultancy, data processing, research and development, architectural services, security services, cleaning etc.

Establishments and enterprises
Norwegian business and industry is made up of 360 000 private sector enterprises (including publicly-owned enterprises, excluding the primary industries). There has been a steady increase in the number of enterprises since these statistics were first published in 2001.
  • Only 15 per cent of the personally owned enterprises have employees.
  • There are 1.6 million employees in private establishments and 780 000 employees in establishments in the public sector as at 1 January 2011.
  • 44 per cent of employees in private establishments are in enterprises with more than 100 employees. The enterprises with more than 100 employees constitute only 0.5 per cent of the number of enterprises.
  • The majority of enterprises and employees are found within wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.
  • The most common organisational form is limited company, followed by sole proprietorship. As many as nine out of ten enterprises have one of these two organisational forms.
  • The majority of newly established enterprises are within Professional, scientific and technical activities.
  • Newly established enterprises in Sogn og Fjordane have the highest survival rate, and enterprises in Oslo the lowest.
  • One out of three sole proprietorships is established by a woman.
  • The share of female board representatives in private limited companies was 17 per cent as of 1 January 2011.
  • The share of female board representatives in public limited companies was 40 per cent as of 1 January 2011.
