File formats on the SSB website

While most documents are in html format, a number of other file formats are used:

MS Excel

Many tables have been created using this format, mainly as a supplement. The advantage of the Excel format is that it is relatively easy for users to update or change the data. In addition, it is a simple way of distributing complex tables.

How to import our tables to Excel

In newer versions of Excel/IE (2003/2007) just right-click on the table and choose import to Excel.

In all Excel versions: Please add an "xls/" in the middle of the url, after "www.ssb.no/". If you want to convert this table: http://www.ssb.no/kpi_en/tab-01-en.html, please add /xls to the middle of the url: http://www.ssb.no/xls/kpi_en/tab-01-en.html
We recommend that you start Excel and paste the modified address after choosing File -> Open.

The standard symbol in our tables for 0 is -. This can create problems, but it is possible to replace this in Excel. To do this tick the box "Find entire cells only".

Comma or semicolon separated (sdv/csv) files

These are tables where each cell is separated with a comma or semicolon. It is relatively easy to import the file to a spreadsheet or a database. The advantage is that the table keeps the structure at the same time as the saving format is not tied to specific programs and versions.

Procedure: Bring up the sdv/csv file in the browser. Store the file on your computer and then import the file (e.g. by File Open in Excel).

PDF

To read PDF documents you must have installed a reading program such as Adobe Reader on your computer. The program can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/. If you are in a network, it is a good idea to talk to your network administrator/user support before installing.

If the program is installed the browser will recognise the PDF file and start Acrobat Reader.

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. The advantages of PDF is that it is platform independent and that the document keeps the same layout and format as the printed version.
