1  Urban settlement:An agglomeration with at least 200 residents and where the distance between houses as a rule does not exceed 50 metres. An urban settlement is delimited independent of administrative boundaries.
2  In municipalities where more than 50 per cent of the population live in urban settlements, persons with no registration on urban/rural residence are considered as inhabitants of the largest urban settlement in the municipality.
3  With assignment of codes as in the 1970 census, the population figures of the major urban settlements would be: Oslo 649 031, Bergen 181 919, Trondheim 128 159 and Stavanger 91 129.
4  New method for delimitation that may influence the comparability with previous figures.
5  From 1 January 1999 continuous urban settlements are merged to one settlement.
6  The population figure is probably about 4 000 too low.
7  The urban settlement Ålesund/Spjelkavik was merged with Langevåg to form Ålesund urban settlement from 1 January 2002.
8  Urban settlement Moss was by 1 January 2007 unified with Son/Store Brevik to form Moss urban settlement.
