2015 was a turbulent year with declining oil prices, currency turmoil and weak growth in the financial markets. The Norwegian Krone weakened throughout the year, and a is large factor behind the increased value of the portfolio investments.

The central government sector dominates

The central government sector, dominated by the Government Pension Fund Global, was the largest investment sector in 2015, as it has been for the last few years. The central government’s portfolio investments amounted to 81 per cent, or NOK 7 362 billion of Norway’s total investments in 2015. The investment strategy of Government Pension Fund Global, with an equity share of 60 per cent, is visible in Norway’s total portfolio investments. The distribution between equity and debt instruments in the total figures was 59 to 41 per cent in 2015.

Largest investments in developed financial markets

The investments in the ten largest investment countries amounted to 73 per cent of the total portfolio investments at the end of 2015. Norway had its largest portfolio investment in the USA, with NOK 2 691 billion. United Kingdom, Japan, Germany and France follow as the biggest investment countries. In general we find Norway’s biggest investments in well developed financial markets.
