Increase in settlement flows

Both incoming and outgoing bank settlement flows increased from the third quarter of 2016 to the fourth quarter of 2016.

Bank settlements from Norway to foreign countries surpassed the amount being received in Norway, meaning that NOK 28 billion more was sent out of Norway than was sent into Norway. 

Settlements from foreign countries to Norwegian bank accounts amounted to NOK 606 billion in the fourth quarter of 2016. This was an increase of 7.7 per cent from the third quarter. 

Outgoing settlements from Norwegian non-financial enterprises and private persons showed an increase of 14.7 per cent from the third quarter. The total settlements sent from Norwegian non-financial enterprises and private persons to foreign countries reached NOK 634 billion. 

Compared with the fourth quarter of 2015, incoming settlements are unchanged. In the same period, outgoing settlements increased by 5.4 per cent, going up by NOK 32 billion.

Increase in settlements from EU countries

From the third to the fourth quarter of 2016, the increase in the inward settlements was mainly due to an increase in transfers from EU countries. The inward settlements from EU countries except Nordic countries had an increase of NOK 32 billion or 11.9 per cent. The inward settlements from Nordic countries had an increase of 15 billion, or 7.3 per cent. Outgoing transfers from Norway to EU countries increased by NOK 74 billion, equivalent to 15.7 per cent.

Manufacturing accounts for a quarter of bank transfers

Manufacturing enterprises received NOK 152 billion from abroad in the fourth quarter of 2016. Outgoing transfers for manufacturing enterprises ended at NOK 157 billion. Manufacturing’s share of total ingoing value is 25.4 per cent, and the share of outgoing value 25.3 per cent. 

Norwegian enterprises sent NOK 619 billion abroad in the fourth quarter of 2016, which was NOK 80 billion more than in the third quarter. Enterprises within electricity, gas and steam, and manufacturing saw a particular increase in settlements to foreign countries, with increases of NOK 30 billion and NOK 16 billion respectively.
