Fuel costs rise in domestic sea transport

The cost of fuel increased by 24.7 per cent in the 2nd quarter of 2016 compared to the previous quarter. The total cost index for operators of vessels in domestic sea transport went up by about 3.9 per cent.

The sub-index of fuel costs ended at 102.5 in the 2nd quarter of 2016. Despite the rise from the previous quarter, the sub-index of fuel costs decreased by 18.3 per cent last year. The index for total costs, which covers all cost groups and all vessels in domestic sea transport, ended at 113.1. This is 3.9 per cent higher compared to the 1st quarter of 2016.

Higher total costs for all vessels

The sub-indices for all types of vessels increased in the 2nd quarter of 2016 compared to the previous quarter. Large passenger boats experienced the largest rise in relative terms among the different types of vessels, increasing by 4.7 per cent. Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2015, the sub-index of large passenger boats decreased by 2.1 per cent.

Financing costs continue to fall

The sub-index for finance costs ended at 59.4 in the 2nd quarter of 2016, a decrease of 6.0 per cent compared to the 1st quarter of 2016. Over the last 12-month period, the financing costs for operators of vessels in domestic sea transport have fallen sharply, by 20.1 per cent.

The sub-index for costs of crew ended at 119.8 in the 2nd quarter of 2016, which is a year-on-year rise of 1.9 per cent and an increase of 0.3 per cent compared to the previous quarter.
