Agglomerations having at least 200 inhabitants and where the distance between the houses as a rule does not exceed 50 metres. Before 1845 cities ('kjøpsteder' and 'ladesteder') are considered as densely populated areas, for 1845-1950 also agglomerations outside cities. The figures for 1845 and 1855 do not include tramps and gipsies.
