Potato production decreased by 11 per cent to a total of 297 600 tonnes from 2010 to 2011. The production from meadows for mowing increased by 1 per cent to a total of 2.4 million tonnes in 2011.

Rental of agricultural land is becoming more widespread. 65 per cent of the agricultural holdings rented all or a part of their agricultural land in 2010. A total of 4.2 million decares, or 42 per cent, of the agricultural area in use was rented land.

Slightly more than 5 400 wild reindeer were shot during the hunting season; a minor decrease from 2010. Hardangervidda wild reindeer area had the highest number of harvested reindeer in 10 years.

In 2010, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority conducted 32 570 inspections in selected areas for plants, land animals, fish, drinking water and food. Over half of these inspections were carried out in relation to food.

The total grain production in 2011 is estimated at 1.04 million tonnes; a decrease of 14 per cent from the year before. The grain harvest is the lowest since 1994. The prognosis indicates a decrease for all types of grain from 2010 to 2011.

In the 2010/11 hunting year, a total of almost 5 900 cervids were killed by car. This is nearly 550 fewer than in the previous year. Twelve hundred animals were killed by train.

Fewer producers - increased production
Figures for 2006 show that there are almost 740 greenhouse establishments in Norway. This is a decrease of 23 per cent since the last census in 1999. In the same period, the greenhouse area and production level have increased.
