Investigated offences More charged with drug offences Investigations were completed on almost 367 000 offences in 2010, of which more than 178 000 are regarded as solved. This resulted in 83 600 persons charged. Compared with previous years, the number of persons charged with drug offences has substantially increased in 2010.

 | Imprisonments More and longer custody imprisonments On average, there were 3 624 prisoners per day in Norwegian prisons in 2010. This is 7 per cent more than the year before, and more than in any of the past 50 years. In addition, more sentences are now being served by means of electronic monitoring outside prisons.

Sanctions More sanctions in all groups of crime In 2010, 336 000 sanctions were registered; a 7.6 per cent increase compared to the preceding year. In total, this meant that 292 000 persons were sanctioned in 2010, of which 9.6 per cent were sanctioned for one or more crimes. The amount of crimes in all main groups of crime was higher in 2010 compared to the preceding year.

The total expenses were 8.5 per cent higher in 2010 than in 2009, which is mainly due to higher wage costs.

Norwegian Correctional Services - StatRes Higher costs and more activity in prisons The number of man-years in the Norwegian Correctional Services in 2010 was 4 390; almost 6 per cent more than the year before. The new prison in Halden was the main contributor to the increase in costs, but the level of activity in the Norwegian Correctional Services is also strongly impacted by the increased use of custody and electronic monitoring.

They also show that the courts processed more cases, and that the processing time is longer for more types of cases in the district courts and appeal courts than in 2009.

Victims of offences Fewer victims of theft, more female victims of violence Of the total population of Norway, 3.4 per cent were registered as victims of offences in 2010. A total of 169 000 persons were registered as victims, which is 3.9 per cent fewer than the previous year. In recent years, the number of registered victims of violence has been stable, but there are fewer young victims and more female victims of violence.

There is a large decrease in offences for profit and damages to property compared to the previous year. However, narcotics crimes increased by 15.6 per cent and the number is now at the same high level as in 2001-2002.

Fear of violence in areas of residence, together with concern for theft and criminal damage has become less prevalent.

 | Disputes dealt with by the Conciliation boards, 2004 Less civil disputes in 18 out of 19 counties In 2004, for the first time in 10 years there was a decrease in the number of civil disputes dealt with by the conciliation boards. Despite the 6,5 per cent decrease from 2003, there was still a higher number of cases than in 2001. Civil disputes judged with a statement accepted were reduced by almost 10 per cent, but some more were reconciled.
