More forest roads rebuilt

In total, 412 kilometres of all-year roads and summer roads were finished and approved in 2016. This is 77 kilometres more than in the previous year, according to new figures from the statistics Forest roads.

A total of 115 kilometres of new all-year forest roads and summer roads were built; an increase of 10 kilometres from 2015. A total of 156 kilometres of new winter roads and tractor roads were built and 68 kilometres were rebuilt in 2016.

Total costs for construction and reconstruction of forest roads amounted to NOK 268 million in 2016. Government subsidies accounted for NOK 98 million of the costs. The average cost per metre of all-year roads and summer roads built with government subsidies was NOK 707.

Extensive forest roads network

Although there is little construction of new forest roads, the total length of such roads in Norway is extensive. A total of 49 400 kilometres of whole-year roads and summer roads were registered as per 1 January 2017. In comparison, the total length of public roads in Norway is approximately 94 000 kilometres.
