Considerable growth in manufacturing turnover

Published:

Seasonally-adjusted figures showed that the total turnover in Norwegian manufacturing increased by 4.2 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2017. It was especially the industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals that contributed to the growth.

The index value for turnover in manufacturing was 146.8 (2005=100) in the period October to December 2017, compared to 140.9 in the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Three-month change: price growth for refined petroleum products contributes to rise in turnover

Seasonally-adjusted figures showed that the turnover in Norwegian manufacturing increased by 4.2 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2017. The highest contribution to the rise came from the industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. A considerable growth in prices for refined petroleum products (see producer price index) was the main cause for the rise in turnover for this industry grouping, even if a small volume growth was recorded (see index of industrial production).

Other industries that made a significant contribution to the rise in manufacturing turnover were:

  • Basic metals
  • Machinery and equipment

Monthly change: rise in turnover for food products

Total Norwegian manufacturing turnover showed an increase of 3.2 per cent from November to December 2017, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. The largest contributions for this growth came from food products and refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Fabricated metal products and machinery and equipment also showed significant growth from November to December.

Annual change: growth in manufacturing turnover in 2017

After two demanding years with a decline in manufacturing turnover, a positive annual change of 2.8 per cent was recorded from 2016 to 2017. Turnover in the domestic market was more or less unchanged, while turnover from the export market increased by 7.4 per cent.
