Monthly earnings up NOK 1 800

Full-time employees had average monthly earnings of NOK 42 000 as of 1 October 2012. This was a year-on-year increase of 4.5 per cent, or NOK 1 800.

The wage statistics for central government employees cover, in addition to the employees in public administration, employees in state-owned institutions for education, transport and communication, health and social work, professional and technical activities, and construction. Average monthly earnings for employees in health and social work were NOK 38 600; an increase of 4.3 per cent. Employees in construction work had earnings of NOK 41 000, which were up 4.1 per cent. In comparison, employees in education institutions, which includes universities, had earnings of NOK 42 700; a growth of 4.7 per cent.

Differences between men and women

Full-time male employees in central government had average earnings of NOK 43 500, whereas women had earnings of NOK 40 100. The year-on-year increases were 4.3 and 5 per cent respectively, or NOK 1 800 for men and NOK 1 900 for women.

Public administration

Full-time employees in public administration had average monthly earnings of NOK 41 800; up NOK 1 800 or 4.5 per cent. Public administration includes overall public service activities, foreign affairs, defence, and social security. Earnings for employees in public order and safety activities were NOK 42 600; up 3.1 per cent. Employees in defence activities had earnings of NOK 39 500; an increase of 4.5 per cent.

Part-time employees

Earnings for part-time employees, calculated as full-time equivalents, were NOK 38 100; up 5 per cent. Part-time employed men had earnings of NOK 40 600, and part-time employed women earned NOK 37 000. The year-on-year increases were 4.6 and 5.4 per cent respectively.

The statistics are based on information for 126 725 full-time employees and 29 350 part-time employees reported to the State Central Register of Government Employees as per 1 October 2012. The statistics also cover employees paid by the salary scale for managers.

Average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included but is presented in the statistics separately.
