| Life expectancy is a summary measure of the average number of additional years a group of individuals can expect to live at a given exact age. It is calculated every year based on the age of those who died and those who did not die last year. If this mortality pattern stays unchanged in the years ahead, it is possible to calculate how old an "average" newborn baby will become. Remaining life expectancy is calculated for men and women and for every age. However, we know that the mortality pattern will change. If the development in medicine and other areas that affect life expectancy continues, actual life expectancy is likely to exceed estimated life expectancy. |
