Non-western immigrants live in cramped conditions
There are great differences in living conditions of persons of non-immigrant background and persons of non-western background. Most people of non-immigrant background live in detached houses that they own themselves. Few people in this category live in cramped conditions and the majority has access to their own garden and balcony. Persons from non-western countries live in blocks of flats, most of them renting rather than owning, they live in cramped dwellings and fewer have access to a garden or balcony. (12.11.2002)
Almost two million occupied dwellings in Norway
There were 1 961 548 occupied dwellings in Norway on 3 November 2001. Almost two out of three live in detached houses. The dwellings we live in are more spacious, however as much as four out of five dwellings are not accessible to wheelchair users. There are now more people renting, particularly in the larger cities. Population and housing Census 2001, commuting
1 out of 3 persons in employment are commuters
About 1 out of 3 persons employed are commuters. Oslo and the other large cities have most in-commuters. The majority of these commuters are from neighbouring municipalities. There is little commuting in the rural municipalities. (06.12.2002)
Pupils and students living away from home
60 per cent of students live alone
A clear majority lives alone, rents their dwelling and live in cramped conditions. Moreover they have considerably less access to housing facilities such as garden, balcony, terrace, etc. (21.11.2002)
Larger households among non-western immigrants
Every third immigrant from Africa or Asia lives in a household of 5 or more persons while only every seventh person of non-immigrant background lives in such a large household. There are few immigrants cohabiting and it is more common for them to live in multiple-family households. There are, however, great differences among the immigrant groups. (09.09.2002)
Population and Housing Census 2001
Steady increase of small households
An increasing number of people are living alone, while couples live as cohabiting couples rather than married couples. Figures from the Population and Housing Census 2001 reveal large regional variations in the distribution of the population in different types of households. (02.09.2002)
